There are hotel options for every budget and type of traveller on Madeira, but the main question comes down to whether you want to stay in Funchal, the capital, or whether you want something more remote and nature-based.
Legally all hotels across Madeira are gay-friendly. The hotels listed below are located in popular parts of the island travelers and excel at providing value for money and quality experiences.
Funchal is ideal if you want to balance nature walks and beach days with bars, restaurants, and nightlife, as there isn’t much of it outside the city. If you want more of a resort vibe, there are some amazing hotels in Machico and Calheta. Caniçal is a popular base for hikers thanks to its coastal paths, and Jardim do Mar is all about surfing and watersports.
Caniço, a resort town a short drive from Funchal, is a popular place to stay and a good compromise between city and nature.

The Saccharum is a standout for its stunning wild views and impressive facilities. With five different swimming pools to explore, you are never short of space to relax. The rooms are designed for comfort and the food quality is excellent. It is the perfect base for trekking and exploring the rugged beauty of the island.
I felt very welcome here and the staff were consistently friendly. Madeira has a very relaxed pace which makes it a great spot for gay travelers who want to escape the city and just switch off.
Saccharum is an incredible masterclass in architecture and luxury design, offering a profoundly peaceful atmosphere paired with breathtaking ocean views. The infinity pool is unforgettable, and the spa provides an absolute slice of heaven for unwinding. While the common breakfast room can feel a bit busy and stressful first thing in the morning, the property offers an easy workaround: upgrading to The Club area provides a super quiet, exclusive breakfast alternative that perfectly resets the day.
I felt completely integrated and safe throughout the entire visit. The staff are truly friendly at all times, making this refined yet relaxed sanctuary a fantastic choice for gay travelers who want to escape the city buzz and reset in nature.
This hotel is absolutely amazing and hands-down one of the best properties I have ever visited. The service is spectacular, and the architecture is a visual masterpiece: every corner, from the stunning sun decks and restaurants to the amazing infinity pool, could be used for a professional photo-shoot. The premium guest experience includes complimentary snacks and drinks, and the a-la-carte rooftop breakfast is an absolute triumph.
I felt extremely welcome, integrated, and safe throughout my entire visit. The staff are charming, chatty, and professional, and the sophisticated, inclusive atmosphere makes it a premier recommendation for gay travelers visiting Madeira.

This property has a cool pop aesthetic and a high-energy vibe that feels a lot like Ibiza. The location near the Funchal port is very convenient for getting into the center of the island. I loved the food at both lunch and dinner, and the general atmosphere is stylish and modern. It was also really nice to meet Vanda and enjoy a moment with her.
There is a great reception here for the community. I even saw inclusive objects and pride flags around the hotel, which made me feel super welcome from the moment I checked in.
Next Hotel blends slick, modern design with a perfect location for exploring Funchal. The rooftop pool offers some of the most incredible ocean views on the island, and the rooms are beautifully sleek and comfortable. It is hard to find fault with such a polished stay, though the standard room pillows were a bit basic for my taste; fortunately, the attentive staff immediately brought out memory foam pillows the moment we asked.
The level of care here is top-tier. I felt completely integrated and very well treated by the team, making it a highly recommended, open-minded base for anyone in the community looking for a stylish island escape.
The location of Hotel Next is excellent, the food is easily five-star quality, and the shower was honestly one of the best I have ever experienced in my life. The bedding is completely divine and ensures spectacular sleep. Being a seasonal island destination, the roof bar hours vary off-season, and tropical ants can pop up, but the premium rooms and excellent amenities make it a top choice.
I felt very safe and deeply welcomed during my entire stay. It is a highly modern, open-minded environment where gay couples can feel entirely at ease while exploring the beautiful island of Madeira.
