What's it really like?
The west-coast of Canada gets a lot of publicity, yet the east-coast city of Montreal, a favorite for gay tourists and home to the largest gayborhood in North America, is the second-largest city in Canada. Known as the “City of Festivals,” gay Montreal is a diverse city with just under 2 million people and over 120 cultural communities represented, hosting over 100 festivals annually.
Montreal is directly north of Vermont in the New England area of the USA and is a chilly haven for visitors. Known for its vibrant gay Montreal scene, it gets extremely cold here, with an average winter temperature of -10°C (14°F). It’s cold most of the year, with winter being long and summer being short.
Montreal’s city area is easy to get around. The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) operates the metro system, and it’s a very bicycle-friendly city.
Montreal is celebrated for its open-mindedness and acceptance of diverse communities, making it a welcoming haven for gay travelers. Le Village, in the heart of the city, stands out as the largest gayborhood in North America. Fierté Montréal, the largest LGBTQI festival in Canada and a highlight of gay Montreal, runs for 11 days in mid-August each year, drawing over 3 million visitors to the city.
Despite the cold, Montreal can be visited year-round. As a festival city, there are things to see every season; in Fall, there’s the World Film Festival, and in Spring, there’s the International Jazz Festival. Winter is excellent for travelers who enjoy extreme snow sports and want to celebrate a white Christmas. Summer is peak season, with average temperatures of 26°C (79°F), and prices tend to be higher across the board.
Montreal is relatively cost-friendly compared to other cities in North America. Tourists can get more for their money in accommodation, food, transport, and tours.
Montreal’s gay scene has been operating since the 1960s. The Village area just north of the downtown area is the gayborhood. Almost all of the city’s 17 gay bars are located on Saint Catherine Street East, which is the area’s hub.
The broad range of venues in gay Montreal means there’s something for every gay traveler. Whether you’re looking for a chill-out sports bar, a classy cocktail bar, karaoke, or drag, there’s a bar specializing in that. Bears and Leather Guys also have two exclusive venues, making it a diverse and inclusive scene.
Montreal gay bars have extended operating hours; it’s standard for most venues to close well into the night, with some opening as early as 8 am.
Montreal is bathhouse-friendly with four of them. Three of them are in the Village gayborhood, and the fourth is only a 10-minute cab ride away.
At the north of the gayborhood in gay Montreal, there are two venues almost directly across the road from each other, and the third one is at the south on the same street. They’re open 24 hours, and if the reviews are anything to go by, the hub needs all of them.
The three in the gayborhood are your regular bathhouses with communal showers: steam rooms, hot tubs, and rooms for hire. The fourth one is a former Turkish Bath and offers massages at a cost.
There are hotels right across the metropolitan area, but tourists, especially those exploring gay Montreal, mainly prefer to stay in the downtown, Old Town, and Latin Quarter areas—a total of 13 km sq. It’s extremely easy to traverse this area by public transport or bicycle.
Montreal hotels aren’t prohibitively expensive and range from absolute luxury to comfortable 2-star properties and hostels. Canada luxury chain Fairmont has its Queen Elizabeth Hotel in the downtown area. 3-star properties like Fairfield Inn and Quality Inn are within walking distance from the gayborhood.
Swimming pools aren’t that common in Montreal; a few hotels have small indoor ones, but they’re few and far between. Pets are welcome at many Montreal hotels; the limit is usually two dogs or cats up to 40 lbs.

There is one massive gayborhood in Montreal, and it’s called The Village. It’s, in fact, the largest recognized gayborhood in the entire North American continent. It’s bordered by Saint Catherine Street East, Atateken Street, Saint Hubert Street, and De Lorimier Avenue. Around 255 LGBTQI businesses are located in the hub, most of them along Saint Catherine Street East, making it the vibrant heart of gay Montreal.
Naturally, the Village is home to the Pride festival every August, but that’s not all. From April until September, rainbow balls are placed on both sides of Saint Catherine Street to announce the hub’s gay presence.
Gay tourists who want to delve into Montreal’s history don’t need to venture too far from their hotel. The Old Town area, just to the east of the Village, is where most of the monuments are, like the gothic Notre Dame Basilica. Wandering around this area feels like stepping back in time, as the roads still have cobblestones, offering a historic backdrop to the vibrant gay Montreal scene.
The Old Port, adjacent to Old Town, is well worth visiting. Ride the 60-meter-high Ferris Wheel (open daily from 10 am to 11 pm), cruise along the St Lawrence River, or eat some cultural food from the many food trucks.
