Gay Saunas Tokyo

Like most of gay Tokyo, the majority of saunas and cruise clubs are located in Shinjuku Ni-Chome. In addition to saunas, Tokyo has a number of cruise clubs which are male-only venues allowing guests to get intimate. Similar to Tokyo’s gay bars many of the play venues target a particular gay niche and operate with strict door policies.

Tokyo’s sauna scene is iconic, and Shinjuku Ni-chome keeps it simple.

  • Top pick: 24 Kaikan Tokyo
  • Best for: big multi-floor facilities and a foreigner-friendly vibe
  • Late night option: 24 Kaikan (open 24 hours)

Again like many things in Japan, gay saunas can be a very different experience from other countries. Tokyo’s 24 Kaikan is perhaps the most famous gay sauna in the city. From the outside the building could be any boring office or apartment block however once inside the 8 story sauna complex gay Japan becomes alive, with bathtubs, saunas, communal sleeping and optional private rooms. The only rule visible states “Gentlemen who chew gum will be removed”.

For all saunas and cruise clubs in Tokyo bring government ID and take note that the theme venues and nights are strictly enforced.

Consensual same-sex activity is legal in Japan. For travelers, the bigger factor is etiquette: keep things discreet, follow venue rules, and avoid filming or photos. If you’re unsure about supplies, bring your own basics so you’re not relying on what may or may not be available.

Weekends are typically the busiest, especially late afternoon into the evening. Because 24 Kaikan runs 24 hours, you can also catch a post-bar crowd late at night and into the early hours.

Yes. 24 Kaikan Tokyo offers accommodation, making it a popular option for spending the night, especially after clubbing. If you want deeper rest and more space, you’ll still be happier with a hotel base nearby: Best gay-friendly hotels in Tokyo.
