Hong Kong is notoriously expensive, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have its fair share of reasonably priced options. Even in busy, touristy areas like Central and Sheung Wan, you’ll find good value hotels dedicated to your comfort and convenience.
Just remember that space is at a premium in this crowded city, so budget rooms will be on the smaller side. Options range from stylish boutique hotels to no-frills spots designed for a quick overnight stay. Look out for perks like free breakfast, free shuttle buses, and on-site gyms.
At the other end of the scale, Hong Kong is the world’s richest city, so you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to gorgeous luxury hotels. The vast majority of these are on Hong Kong Island, concentrated along the Harbour. Luckily for gay visitors, this is also where many of the city’s gay bars, clubs, and saunas are located, especially in the Sheung Wan and Central areas. Of course, a room or suite in one of these 5-star hotels won’t come cheap, but your stay is likely to be unforgettable.
Gay travelers shouldn’t encounter any issues checking into hotels in Hong Kong. In general Hong Kong is accepting of gay travelers.
For legal protections, Hong Kong still has a way to go. Legal anti-discrimination protections are still pending, and same-sex marriage or civil unions are not currently recognized in Hong Kong.
Many gay travelers who want to party choose to stay on Hong Kong Island, near to Soho and LFK, the nightlife center of gay Hong Kong, in what we have called “HK Island Gayborhood”. From here you can reach most of HK’s gay nightlife within a 15-20 minute walk.
With most of the MRT (train network) closing at 1 am and re-opening at 5 am, choosing a hotel within walking distance saves a late-night taxi ride.
