Location

Saccharum is located in the resort town of Calheta, a pretty area on the southern coast flanked by blue seas on one side and majestic mountains on the other. The hotel is less than a 10-minute walk from the Calheta Marina, which has some great restaurants, and a short drive from attractions including Maderia’s Contemporary Arts Museum (Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira) and Engenho da Calheta, a functioning sugar mill and museum. However, the main attraction is without doubt the beach. Calheta is home to one of Madeira’s only golden sand beaches, and a stay at Saccharum places you a stone’s throw away from it. You are also fantastically located for hiking, paragliding, scuba diving, surfing, and much more.

Style & Design

Saccharum’s interiors were created by Madeira-born interior designer Nini Andrade Silva, and features impeccable modern design throughout, with an emphasis on elegant simplicity and cohesion with the natural world that surrounds the hotel. Large windows provide ample views of the mountains and sea, decor in the rooms nods to the region’s history of sugar production, and the tiered design of the building, cut into a cliffside, makes the most of Madeira’s dramatic landscape.

Facilities

Saccharum boasts two external infinity pools, both set on the hotel’s tiered set of sundecks, which offer incredible views from almost anywhere in the outdoor areas. There is also a heated indoor pool for cooler days, which is part of a gorgeous, state of the art spa surrounded by lush gardens. As well as a wide range of luxury treatments, the spa offers a jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath, ice fountain, and Halotherapy (Salt Therapy) room, not to mention an excellently equipped gym with fantastic ocean views. Other facilies include a squash court and games room. There are two restaurants and two bars on site, serving a range of international dishes and delicious drinks. The lounge bar is an especially great spot to catch a stunning Madeira sunset.

Rooms

Every room at Saccharum has a breezy, natural feel, with light earthy tones, lots of light, and murals featuring photographs of the region’s sugar canes. One thing we love about Saccharum is that every room has a balcony - however, if you want to make the most of it, we recommend upgrading to a Limited Sea View or full Sea View balcony. All the rooms are spacious, but the Suites are especially generous. These come with fully equipped kitchenettes and living areas which can sleep an additional adult. The Premium Oceanfront Deluxe Suite is the ultimate luxury, which comes with private check-in with sparking wine, free Spa access, and free access to the Premium Lounge and Premium Sundeck. There’s also a large in-room bathtub with plenty of room for two which overlooks the sea - it doesn’t get much more romantic.

The Saccharum is a standout for its stunning wild views and impressive facilities. With five different swimming pools to explore, you are never short of space to relax. The rooms are designed for comfort and the food quality is excellent. It is the perfect base for trekking and exploring the rugged beauty of the island.

I felt very welcome here and the staff were consistently friendly. Madeira has a very relaxed pace which makes it a great spot for gay travelers who want to escape the city and just switch off.

Saccharum is an incredible masterclass in architecture and luxury design, offering a profoundly peaceful atmosphere paired with breathtaking ocean views. The infinity pool is unforgettable, and the spa provides an absolute slice of heaven for unwinding. While the common breakfast room can feel a bit busy and stressful first thing in the morning, the property offers an easy workaround: upgrading to The Club area provides a super quiet, exclusive breakfast alternative that perfectly resets the day.

I felt completely integrated and safe throughout the entire visit. The staff are truly friendly at all times, making this refined yet relaxed sanctuary a fantastic choice for gay travelers who want to escape the city buzz and reset in nature.

This hotel is absolutely amazing and hands-down one of the best properties I have ever visited. The service is spectacular, and the architecture is a visual masterpiece: every corner, from the stunning sun decks and restaurants to the amazing infinity pool, could be used for a professional photo-shoot. The premium guest experience includes complimentary snacks and drinks, and the a-la-carte rooftop breakfast is an absolute triumph.

I felt extremely welcome, integrated, and safe throughout my entire visit. The staff are charming, chatty, and professional, and the sophisticated, inclusive atmosphere makes it a premier recommendation for gay travelers visiting Madeira.
