The Late Birds is one of two all-male gay hotels in Lisbon, and it is the higher-end of the two. It is set in a gorgeously restored 18th-century house and is based on an “Urban Resort” concept that prioritizes luxury, comfort, and exclusivity. It’s very much a boutique experience, with only 16 rooms and decor that has been carefully curated by the owners.
The rooms are decorated simply but tastefully in clean white tones, and feature large comfortable beds, high-end toiletries, floor-to-ceiling windows, and your own personal iMac computer. Some of them have private balconies and most have great views over the city.
Due to the intimate atmosphere, the common areas are one of the hotel’s best features: indeed, the stylish pool, lounge bar, and terrace are all perfectly suited to mingling with fellow guests. The cooked breakfast is exceptional, and there is even a delectable brunch on offer on weekends. The bar sometimes hosts live performances of traditional Portuguese music.
As can be expected of Lisbon’s premier gay hotel, the city’s gay nightlife is just next door. Trombeta Bath and the bars along Rua da Barroca are less than 5 minutes away on foot, and Trumps is just a 15-minute walk. The owners and staff are all lovely and knowledgeable about all things gay Lisbon, and so are a great resource for finding out what’s happening in the city.
