New York’s Oldest Gay Bar

Updated January 24, 2025

Prominent in the city’s gay history, Julius’ bucked the trend in the 1960s, allowing gay men a place to drink and socialize. The famous landmark bar is now known for selling juicy burgers. Theme nights include Mattachine and after-dark parties.

Julius’ is open Mondays to Thursdays 4 pm – 2 am and Fridays from 4 pm to 2 am. On weekends, it opens at midday and closes at 4 am on Saturdays and 2 am on Sundays. Weekday happy hour runs from open until 7 pm.
