This adults-only gay hotel in Madrid is part of the international Axel chain, which features several trendy gay hotels across Europe and Asia. As always, the hotel is hetero-friendly but decidedly gay. It is one of the top 30 hotels in Madrid on TripAdvisor, which is a testament both to Madrid’s popularity with gay visitors and to the hotel’s overall exceptional standards.
The rooms feature some of Axel Hotel’s most quirky and unique designs, honoring the 80’s counterculture of Madrid. In the smaller rooms, you can expect pink neon and black and white tiles, while the larger ones feature a more baroque style with plenty of gold and intricately molded walls. The Gold Deluxe suite in particular feels like your own private palace, including a freestanding bathtub next to the bed.
Axel Hotel Madrid features an exceptional rooftop terrace with swimming pool, loungers, and a trendy Sky Bar that is a popular gay meeting point in central Madrid. The best thing is that, unlike many other hotel terraces, this one can be enjoyed year-round. There is a small but well-equipped gym, jacuzzi, sauna, and massage booth also available.
As can be expected of a gay hotel, Axel Hotel is located close to Chueca – about 20 minutes away from most of the gay bars and clubs. There are two popular hardcore cruise clubs – Club Baco and ATTACK – within a 5-minute walk of the hotel, and Sauna Lavapies is just a bit further. Meanwhile, many of Madrid’s cultural offerings are also a short walk away, including the museums of the Golden Triangle and Plaza Mayor.
