The Gay Village’s proximity to Manchester Picadilly station means that the surrounding area is filled with great hotel options. None of the luxury hotels in this list are further than 10 minutes from Canal Street, with many being just steps away from the gay nightlife. Manchester is a city with a strong design culture, meaning most luxury hotels have a cool, boutique feel to them, even when they are part of a large chain. City apartments are a popular option, offering all the convenience of a pied-a-terre whether you’re in town for a weekend or a long stay.
Yes. Simply put, legally all hotels in the UK are gay-friendly.
Generally speaking, most of the UK’s big cities will be very welcoming to LGBT visitors. Manchester is especially known for being gay-friendly, thanks in part to a large student population. You will feel right at home in the gay village of Canal Street, and you are unlikely to attract any attention in the rest of the city center.
Canal Street is the center of Manchester’s gayborhood, and all the hotels recommended are within walking distance. From Canal Street, it’s only a short walk from both the city center for the general tourist attractions and also Manchester Picadilly, the city’s main train station.
Kimpton Clocktower is a gorgeous hotel, housed in a grand Victorian building and impeccably designed in a blend of contemporary and classic style. Every room is unique and picture-perfect, with high ceilings, large windows, and original Victorian and 1930s features. For an extra touch of luxury, splash out on one of the suites – each comes with a record player and a vinyl collection, a nod to Manchester’s rich musical heritage. There is a very good gym (in addition to yoga mats in every room), a trendy restaurant with beautiful industrial design, and two cocktail bars. Even better, Kimpton Clocktower is located just a 5-minute walk from the Gay Village, making it a fantastic option for a luxury gay getaway.
Velvet is perhaps the most popular luxury gay-friendly hotel in Manchester, located directly on Canal Street a few steps away from several gay bars. Each room features unique, dramatic design – think velvet curtains, four-poster beds, and baroque patterned wallpaper. The beds are especially plush, perfect for resting after a long night out on Canal Street. Their standard King Rooms are plenty luxurious, but we recommend going for a Balcony Room or a Penthouse Suite if you can. The Velvet Brasserie serves up delicious food and cocktails, and the bar is a cool, fashionable place to start your night out – if the weather is right, try to grab a spot on the canalside terrace. Velvet Hotel is one of the most booked gay-friendly hotels in Manchester.
Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel is located a 5-minute walk from Canal Street and less than 10 minutes from Picadilly Station. It offers modern, cozy rooms with high-quality amenities. The Privilege and Superior rooms have extra perks like a Nespresso machine, robe, and slippers, with the Superior being particularly spacious and comfortable. The on-site restaurant boasts exceptional views of Manchester’s skyline – don’t miss out on the Manchester-themed afternoon tea – and the gym is small but well-equipped.
Roomzzz offers fantastic, stylish aparthotels in a conveniently central location, a stone’s throw away from the Gay Village – Cruz 101, one of the most popular gay clubs in town, is literally a minute away. There is a range of sizes and styles to choose from, but all of the apartments have a well-equipped kitchenette, extra-comfy king-size bed, and power shower. They are also all very spacious – the smallest, the Smart Studio, is a generous 28m2. The Penthouse Suite sleeps up to four people in two separate rooms and features luxury touches like a walk-in wardrobe and a jacuzzi bathtub. The hotel offers a free Grab & Go breakfast and there is a laundry room you can use for free.
This award-winning aparthotel offers a range of stylish contemporary studios and apartments, each filled with everything you need to make yourself at home in Manchester. Every apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen, plush modern furnishings, and a cool industrial-chic vibe. You can choose between a studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom – it’s worth pointing out that even the smallest studio is a spacious 30m2. The two-bedroom suites are ideal for groups of four, with the sprawling, airy Penthouse Suite being particularly luxurious. It’s not just about the rooms, though: the facilities at Native Manchester are also outstanding, from the trendy bar/restaurant/cafe space to the charming deli, not to mention the (independently run) cinema and state-of-the-art gym in the same building. Plus, Native Manchester is located less than a 10-minute walk to the Gay Village.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Piccadilly is located just a 5-minute walk from Canal Street and an even shorter walk from Piccadilly Station. It offers modern rooms and suites with high-end amenities, fantastic beds, power showers, and plenty of natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The suites are especially spacious and can sleep up to three adults. Facilities include a craft beer bar, an excellent restaurant, a fitness room, and a lovely summer terrace. As per DoubleTree tradition, every guest is welcomed with a warm chocolate chip cookie on arrival.
Cove Minshull Street (previously called SACO Manchester – Piccadilly) offers cool, minimalist apartments a stone’s throw from the Gay Village – popular gay pub Churchill’s is just about 150m away. With simple pastel and white palettes and carefully selected art and furnishings, every apartment is bright, spacious, and stylish. Each comes with a fully-equipped kitchen (including espresso machine), an extra-comfy Hypnos bed, and access to the on-site fitness suite. Book a Club room if you fancy some extra perks like early check-in and late check-out, complimentary high-speed wifi, and luxury bathroom accessories. The two-bedroom apartments are great for groups of four.
This Holiday Inn is located right by the canal, a 5-minute walk to the heart of the Gay Village. It offers modern, stylish rooms and suites with excellent beds and amenities. The main benefits of the suites are increased spaciousness and a separate living and dining space, as well as added perks like a bathrobe and minibar. The Fitness centre is particularly well-equipped with a full range of cardio and weights equipment, and the trendy open lounge downstairs is ideal for getting some work done or starting your night out with a cocktail.
