Madrid is Spain’s largest LGBT hub, and one of Europe’s largest as well. This makes Madrid’s gayborhood, the lively central area of Chueca, one of the very best places for gay nightlife on the continent.
It is worth noting that the Spanish word “hostal” does not mean the same as “hostel”. A “hostal” is a type of accommodation specific to Spain and Latin America, which essentially boils down to something between a hotel and a hostel. It’s more useful to think of it simply as a budget hotel.
All accommodation in Madrid is gay-friendly, and you should not have any trouble booking rooms as a gay couple or group of friends.
There is one gay hotel in Mardid center, a branch of the international gay hotel chain Axel Hotels, famously HetroFriendly. The hotel is in Las Letras, which is excellently located for sightseeing and about 20 minutes walk from most of the gay bars and clubs in Chueca.
Given the city’s large and vibrant gay scene, all the hotels in the city center, and especially those in and around Chueca and Malasaña, are extremely gay-friendly. However, there are of course a handful of them that specialize in serving gay customers. During Madrid Pride (the largest Pride event in Europe), you can expect these to book up fast.
Most gay travelers to Madrid choose to stay in Chueca or in neighboring Gran Via.
Chueca is the heart of gay Madrid and the country’s biggest gayborhood. Here, you can find a gay establishment for every taste and every time of the day or night.
Gran Via sitting right between Chueca’s nightlife and the city center. Gran Via offers visitors the best of both areas. 10-minute walk to either gay bars and clubs or the sites of the city center.
Puerta del Sol comes south of Gran Via and sits slightly further from the Checa gayborhood.
Puerta Del Sol and the Gran Via, the city’s central avenue, are the heart of Madrid’s city center. Gran Via is lined with some of Madrid’s best shopping as well as some famous architecture, while Puerta Del Sol is one of the city’s main meeting spots for both locals and tourists alike.
Most of the main Madrid tourist highlights are within close walking distance to this area, including the Puerta del Sol Square, Plaza Mayor, Royal Palace, and the three museums that make up what is called the Golden Triangle or Art Walk: El Prado, Thyssen-Bornemiza, and Reina Sofia.

Although housed in a gorgeous early 20th-century building, the interiors are bright, colorful, and extremely modern. That said, original architectural elements like corniced ceilings and traditional iron balconies honor the building’s history. Some of the rooms feature modern secluded balconies with sun loungers, and some have their own jacuzzi.
The decor in the common spaces is a similar mix of old and new, with Art Deco elements contrasting with lovely bright colors. There is a Wine Bar, a Vermouth Bar, a restaurant serving traditional Madrid cuisine, and a rooftop terrace bar. The latter is especially worth the visit, overlooking the excellent rooftop pool with incomparable views over central Madrid. The gym is small but good.
The hotel is located on Gran Via, just at the edge of the Chueca gayborhood. All of Chueca’s gay offerings are within easy walking distance, as are Madrid landmarks like Puerta del Sol and the Golden Triangle Museums. It’s no surprise that Iberostar Las Letras Gran Vía is one of the most booked gay-friendly hotels in Madrid.
