Jakarta is one of the best places in the world to indulge in a bit of 5-star luxury. The best hotels in the city are all incredibly affordable for international standards, meaning everyone has a chance to enjoy the city in style. This is why, exceptionally, half of the hotels on our list are 5-star. If you really are traveling on a shoestring, quality budget options also abound.
Though homosexuality is definitely frowned upon in Indonesia, sex between two men is legal. As such hotels in Jakarta could be described as gay-friendly. Most won’t bother you or ask any questions. They may assume you want twin beds if you are checking in as a couple, and it would be up to you to clarify otherwise.
That said, many gay travelers prefer the comfort of staying with a big international chain since they more or less guarantee a level of professionalism. Most of the luxury hotel chains such as the Hilton, Ritz-Carlton, and Four Seasons have locations in Jakarta, as well as international brands like Ibis.
Jakarta doesn’t have any gay saunas, but a couple of the hotels on this list have saunas that are commonly frequented by gay men. Public sex is illegal and can get you in a lot of trouble in Indonesia, so if you are thinking of meeting someone in the saunas, it is recommended you stay in the hotel so you have a private room upstairs.
Due to the very limited scene in gay Jakarta, there is nothing resembling a gayborhood or even any particular gay venues to watch out for. Most visitors stay within Central Jakarta or South Jakarta.
Central Jakarta houses the city’s most famous landmark, the National Monument (also called Monas). It sits in the middle of Merdeka Square, a huge space (actually the third-largest square in the world) which is at the heart of the city’s social and political life. Nearby are many other landmarks, including the National Museum of Indonesia, Jakarta Cathedral, and Masjid Istiqlal, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia.
Most hotels sit within the Golden Triangle of Jakarta – This area stretches across Central and South Jakarta, mostly overlapping with the South Jakarta neighborhood of Setiabudi. It is the main business district of the city, containing the many skyscrapers that make up its skyline. Here is where some of the city’s best high-end hotels are located, as well as great bars, restaurants, and clubs.
♥ Large lagoon-style outdoor pool for lounging and cooling down
♥ Excellent selection of international restaurants
♥ Spacious, comfortable, and elegant rooms
Shangri-La Hotel is located just next to Jakarta’s city center, but it’s easy to forget that once you’re inside. This huge hotel, totaling over 600 rooms, is located in a sprawling oasis next to the river. With a huge lagoon-style pool, several restaurants, and swaying palm trees as far as the eye can see, this is perhaps the closest you can get to an Indonesian beach resort in the middle of the capital.
Of course, Jakarta is still very much around you, as seen through skyline city views from most rooms. The decor in these is elegant, blending classic luxury with contemporary touches. The beds are large and plushy and the amenities are all high-quality. Attentive touches like complimentary mineral water and a daily fruit plate elevate the whole experience even further.
Shangri-La Hotel boasts five restaurants and three bars, serving a wide range of foods and drinks. Among these, you will find SATOO, a stunning international buffet with a whopping twelve food stations from around the world, as well as authentic Chinese, Japanese, and Italian restaurants.
The pool is, of course, the hotel’s biggest draw, and the separate kids’ pool keeps the main area nice and quiet. There is also a good fitness suite, an exercise studio, and even a set of tennis courts. Spa facilities including jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, massages, and other wellness treatments.
The hotel’s proximity to the Golden Triangle means that most trendy nightlife spots in the city are easily reached by public transport or on foot.
