Lucca 390 | Gay Shanghai’s Most Popular Bar/Club

Lucca-390-the-Best-Gay-Bar-Shanghai

Since the older generation of Shanghai gay venues shut down a few years ago, Lucca has arguably been Shanghai’s most popular gay bar. Formerly known as Shanghai 390, it was shut down for unexplained reasons by the authorities in 2014, and re-opened in 2015 as Lucca Cafe and Lounge. On weeknights and during the day, it is a laid-back bar with a great selection of freshly made food and drinks. On weekends, it becomes the city’s gay hotspot, with themed parties and international DJs catering to a mixed crowd of local and foreign men. Don’t miss out on their Thursday night ¥100 open bar, with drinks served by shirtless model barmen.

Lucca 390

Music: EDM and techno beats on Friday and Saturday nights, but a significantly more chilled-out vibe on weeknights.

Crowd: A mixed crowd of local men and tourists, mostly in their 20s and 30s.

Dress: Most bars in and around the trendy French Concession have a casual dress code. Jeans and shorts are ok, but the young locals do tend to dress up a bit more.

Lucca 390 is located in Changing, Panyu Road, near the French Concession. Most of the other gay bars in the city are nearby.

Taxi: The easiest reference to give your driver is the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Panyu Road, which is a short 2-minute walk from Lucca. Later at night, you can either hail a taxi or use an app like Didi (essentially Chinese Uber) to call you one.

Metro: Lucca and the surrounding gay bars are within walking distance of Jiaotong University station (Lines 10 and 11). The metro is ideal for getting there to start your night but closes between 10:30 and 11:00, so you will have to get a taxi to get back.

Bus: Bus line 76 goes along Panyu Road, with stops 5 minutes away from both directions. Lines 48, 911, and 946 serve nearby Xinhua Road.
