20 Best Gay Hotels in Amsterdam

Gay Favorite Hotels in Central Amsterdam

Amsterdam has a unique city layout, with several concentric rings created by the city’s canals. Most tourists like to stay within these rings, especially the large central area that contains the red light district, Dam square, and Damrak. Gay Amsterdam is more or less…

evenly spread out across the city, with two main clusters of bars. One is located in the red light district, and includes its fair share of fetish and cruising bars, as well as the only gay sauna in town. The other is further south, between the Singel and Herengracht canals.

There are all types of gay bars and clubs in Amsterdam, from traditional “brown cafe” pubs to large cruising clubs. The most popular gay club in town is Church Club, which is one of the latter, but you are always spoilt for choice if you want something more low-key.

There are other areas in Berlin with gay nightlife, especially further east, but they tend to be spread out. Most of the hotels in this list have excellent public transport links, so you can also check out the gay bars and clubs in other areas of the city.

Art’otel has one of the best locations in Amsterdam, just opposite the central station. When you stay here, you are perfectly positioned to explore the canals as well as various famous landmarks such as Anne Frank House, Dam Square, and the red light district.

Arguably more interestingly, however, you are also a 5-minute walk away from gay institutions like The Queen’s Head and Café ‘t Mandje and just around the corner from Amsterdam’s only gay sauna, Sauna Nieuwezijds. This, combined with the exceptional design and service delivered by this modern 5-star, makes it one of the most popular gay-friendly hotels in Amsterdam.

The hotel is a contemporary designer affair, featuring original artwork by Dutch sculptor Joep van Lieshout’s studio. The rooms are decorated in a subtle and understated style, with cool greys and whites contrasting with sleek black surfaces. But it’s not just about design – heavenly beds, relaxing mood lighting, and luxurious rain showers all combine to create a soothing and supremely comfortable atmosphere.

Perhaps Art’otel’s biggest selling point is 5&33, the hotel’s restaurant / bar / venue / library / lounge / art gallery. The food is exceptional, the cocktails inventive, and there is always something going on – don’t miss out on their Truffle Tuesdays and Thursdays, where you can get a truffle pasta dish and glass of prosecco for €20. There is also a very good Active Club with gym, indoor swimming pool, and sauna.

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam is both historic and cutting-edge, set in a 15th-century Dutch building that has been renovated with gorgeous modern interiors by a French designer. This combination also highlights Sofitel’s unique ethos: hotels that feel truly local, but always with a high-end French influence.

You can see this throughout the hotel. For example, the hotel includes a Michelin-starred hotel, Bridges, as well as an accompanying bistro. But it also includes a Parisian themed library cafe, Library ‘Or’ and a traditional Dutch “brown cafe” style bar. These are tied together by a refreshing garden terrace, which is perfect for observing the historical Dutch architecture of The Grand.

The rooms and suites were designed with the students of the Design Academy of Eindhoven, which drew from the building’s prestigious past and its beautiful original features. The result is a 21st-century style with Golden Age flair. The rooms range from Standard to Luxury, but if you are going to be staying at The Grand, you might as well go all out on one of their suites – the ones overlooking the canal are the most sought-after.

Indeed, the hotel directly faces one of central Amsterdam’s canals and is right next to the red light district. Long-standing gay bars The Queen’s Head and Cafe’t Mandje are under 10 minutes away. The largest and most popular gay clubs, NYX and Church, are 10 and 15 minutes away respectively.

Pulitzer Amsterdam is made up of a series of interconnected Golden Age Amsterdam townhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The hotel sits between the iconic Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals, and you can even rent a private boat trip from your hotel door. It doesn’t get more authentically Dutch than this.

Inside, the decor is cozy and chic. The rooms are beautifully designed in a clean and modern style, but with beautiful old-fashioned touches like chandeliers and baroque-style furniture. It’s luxury, but with an intimate mood that will make you feel right at home.

Rooms range from Cozy, designed with the solo traveler in mind, to Family, an airy split-level option that comfortably fits four people. You can also take it up a notch with a suite, which includes a mini-kitchen and a spacious living area. Every room comes with a marble bathroom, Le Labo toiletries, a bike repair kit, and much more.

The hotel restaurant, Jansz, is upscale but unpretentious, serving delicious international dishes, and the garden cafe is a lovely place to sit back and relax at any time of the day. The Pulitzer Bar honors old-school cocktail lounges with plush seating, moody lighting, and expert mixologists serving both classic and innovative concoctions.

The location is excellent for sightseeing, with Anne Frank House just five minutes away and most other Amsterdam landmarks within walking distance. The closest gay bars are PRIK and Boysclub 21, both of them about 10 minutes away (do note that the latter is also a brothel).

W Amsterdam has all the elements you usually expect from a the gay-favorite chain: a unique contemporary look, luxurious facilities, and a fresh, young edge. As always, they have drawn inspiration from the local culture for their decor, and here in design-obsessed Amsterdam this means a more understated, minimalist look than in some of their other locations. The effect is effortlessly cool and supremely pleasant.

The hotel is split across two buildings, Exchange and Bank. Exchange houses the cheaper selection of rooms, which are more compact and simply decorated, while Bank features the Fabulous range of rooms as well as various luxury suites. All the rooms feature W signature beds and ultra-smooth bedding for a revitalizing night’s sleep.

The dining options are perfect if you like your dinners meaty and your drinks fruity. You can choose between a steakhouse, an excellent burger spot, a Michelin-starred Mediterranean restaurant, and a swanky cocktail lounge. The hotel also offers very good fitness facilities, including a fully-equipped 24/7 gym (offering free classes), sauna, whirlpool, and both an indoor and an outdoor heated pool.

W Amsterdam is located just behind Dam Square, one of the central hubs of the city. The red light district, Anne Frank House, the Flower Market, and Dampkring – one of the most famous “coffee shops” in the city -, are all within a 10-minute walk of the hotel. Club Church is a 15-minute walk away, as is Club NYX.

If you want cutting-edge design with a sense of fun, you’ve come to the right place. From the second you walk into this concept hotel from the mind of Dutch interior designer Marcel Wanders, you are surprised and delighted.

Elegant and eccentric furniture and fixings are matched with nods Netherland’s historical influence, such as Delft patterns and old-fashioned world maps, with a few unexpected items thrown in (the giant picture of fishes in various rooms spring to mind).

The rooms come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but are all spacious – no tiny cupboard rooms here. Some come with views of the hotel’s beautiful garden, some overlook the canal, and some look straight into the huge, universe-themed Atrium of the hotel. All feature a unique open-concept bathroom, featuring an in-room sink and mirror (which is actually perfect for getting ready) and a shower with a two-way mirror into the room (which is weird but fun).

When it comes to their dining options, Andaz Amsterdam keeps it simple but skillful: Bluespoon Restaurant features bold, fresh dishes celebrating both local products and local creativity, while Bluespoon Bar is a great place to watch the world go by, cocktail in hand. There is also an excellent spa, which continues the trend of impeccable design, and good fitness facilities.

Club Church and its decadent parties are just a short 5-minute walk away, and popular casual gay bar Spijker is even closer. Other gay venues within a 10-minute radius include BACKDOOR, Club NYX, and Taboo.

This TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Award winner has an exceptional location just next to the central train station, making it super convenient for both rail arrivals and airport transfers. This is also the best location to explore Amsterdam’s famous sights, from the canals to the markets and the sleazy streets of the red light district. Gay travelers are particularly well-served here: the city’s only gay sauna and two of its most beloved gay bars (The Queen’s Head and Cafe’ t Mandje) are all under five minutes away from the hotel.

Despite being originally made up of 15th and 17th-century buildings, the style is modern and subtle: rooms are decorated almost exclusively in crisp white and warm grey, many of them featuring original oak beams. Large windows and spacious layouts create an airy, relaxing atmosphere that is the perfect antidote to a day of intense sightseeing (or a night of intense partying).

Breakfast is particularly excellent, with that rare combination of quality and variety. There is a Michelin-starred restaurant on-site, as well as a bar that stays open until 1 AM (2 AM on weekends), so you can always get that last nightcap.

There is a good fitness room and a brand new wellness center, including sauna and Turkish bath, with massage treatments available. This NH Collection also shines in the small extra details, such as late breakfast and check-out on Sundays, a private boat dock, and dedicated Guest Relations staff whose only job is to help you make the most of your time in Amsterdam.

This gay-friendly Amsterdam hotel is a great 4-star option at the heart of the city, offering affordable accommodation that doesn’t compromise on design or comfort. Rooms come in various styles, from a cozy single room to the excellent Spa and Wellness rooms, both featuring in-room whirlpool bathtubs for ultimate relaxation. The suites also come with this perk, as well as lots of extra room and added designer touches.

The hotel is conveniently located between the central station and Dam Square. Within a 10-minute radius, you will already find enough gay hotspots to keep you occupied for a while, including Sauna Nieuwezijds, The Queen’s Head, Cafe ‘t Mandje, PRIK, Boysclub 21, and The ONE @ Eagle. Two cruising bars, The WEB and The Cuckoo’s Nest, are just a few doors down. Because of Amsterdam’s compact layout, the vast majority of famous landmarks, bars, coffee shops, markets, and canals are also walking distance.

Breakfast is tasty (the do-it-yourself fresh orange juice is a guest favorite) and there the hotel bar is a nice place to relax. Inntel Amsterdam Centre has a modern Wellness Club, which includes a Finnish sauna and Turkish steam room, all free for hotel guests. There is, however, no gym.

Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam is one of the closest hotels to the central station. This positions you within walking distance of several gay bars (including The Queen’s Head, Cafe ‘t Mandje, Boysclub 21, and The ONE) as well as the infamous red light district. Even the bigger gay clubs on the other side of the city center are only a 20-minute walk away.

This is a large hotel with almost 300 rooms, all of which are decorated in a simple but sleek contemporary style. There are no small, underwhelming rooms hidden amongst the more impressive offerings – everything is consistently spacious, comfortable, and modern. If you have the budget, pay a little more for an Executive category room, as these come with iconic views of Amsterdam’s beautiful central station.

This hotel has access to excellent fitness and wellness facilities, especially for a 4-star. Guests have complimentary 24h access to a gym, swimming pool, and Finnish sauna, and they can also pay extra for salon and solarium services. This makes Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam a perfect choice for gym bunnies and relaxation addicts. Albus Hotel is a great 4-star designer boutique hotel in the city center, featuring creative, contemporary design with impeccable facilities. The rooms are modern, colorful, and extremely comfortable, each featuring a high-quality mattress, smooth Egyptian cotton bedding, Nespresso machine coffee, a convenient complimentary smartphone, and branded bathroom amenities.

All the rooms are spacious, but you may want to opt for a suite if you want to add a touch of luxury to your stay. The hotel is perfectly located for gay nightlife. Several popular gay venues, including Club NYX, SoHo, Taboo, and Exit Cafe, are located in the immediate vicinity of Albus Hotel, meaning you can have a full-scale, varied night out without walking more than 5 minutes. This gay-favorite Amsterdam hotel is a friendly, colorful, and low-key boutique hotel. Everything from the room decor to the food at the on-site restaurant is high-quality but unpretentious, perfect for those who like a personal touch to their hotel. This attitude is even exemplified in their hotel bar, an Honesty bar where you can simply take what you like at any time and pay later. As you can expect, the staff are also super attentive and welcoming.

The rooms are spacious and airy, with good amenities and an excellent rain shower. The decor is simple but tasteful: neutral whites and greys brought to life with vivid bespoke wall art and small colorful touches throughout. Some of the rooms, labelled “Souterrain”, are basements – if a window is important to you, go for a Standard or Executive.

The location of Hotel JL No76 is slightly less central than some others on the list, but this makes it perfect for lovers of art and culture. The hotel is just a couple of minutes away from Amsterdam’s best museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk Museum), and an equally short distance from Vondelpark, which is the best place to enjoy Amsterdam on a sunny day.

In terms of nightlife, Club Church and Spijker Bar are 15 minutes away, and more central locations can easily be reached by tram (the Rijksmuseum tram stop is only 3 minutes away).

Hotel CC is ideally located on the Damrak, right next to the red light district. These places vary from low-key traditional bars to fetish cruising clubs, meaning there is something for everyone in the area.

However, the location isn’t just about gay Amsterdam. It is also a great place for eating, drinking, shopping, and sightseeing – all of central Amsterdam’s attractions are walking distance. The iconic coffee shop (not the coffee kind of coffee shop) The Grasshopper is a couple of steps away.

The hotel itself is a modern and straightforward 3-star. Rooms are on the smaller side (as you can expect with a hotel in such a central location) but they are clean, comfortable, and pleasantly decorated in neutral tones. RHO Hotel is located near Dam square, walking distance to many landmarks and city highlights as well as to various nightlife options. It is conveniently situated between Amsterdam’s two main gay areas: the grouping of bars and clubs in the Red Light District and the one around Rembrandtplein. It is only about 10 minutes in each direction, making RHO Hotel is a popular mid-range option for gay travelers.

The independent hotel is based in a grand early 20th century Art Deco building that used to be a bank, which gives it a unique vintage air. The decor can be a bit dated, especially in the lobby and breakfast room, but generally this works with the overall feel of the older building. The rooms are decorated simply but comfortably and are spacious, clean, and airy.

There is a quite generous complimentary breakfast served every morning, with a range of hot and cold dishes, Overall, this is no-frills accommodation offering good value for money in a very good central location: perfect if you just need your hotel to cover the basics while you spend most of your time enjoying the city.

Ibis Amsterdam Centre benefits from one of the best locations in the city, just next to Amsterdam Centraal. This makes it ideal for the train connection with Schipol Airport, but also for day trips out of Amsterdam and rail travel across Europe. The location is also great for sightseeing, with Anne Frank House, Dam square, the red light district, and the canals all a very short walk away.

Because you are so close to red light district and its surrounding nightlife, you are also well-located for the highlights of gay Amsterdam. Sauna Nieuwezijds, Boysclub 21, The WEB, The Cuckoo’s Nest, The Queen’s Head, and Café ’t Mandje are all under 10 minutes away.

This is a relatively new Ibis, which means the rooms are all modern and well-equipped, if not on the small side. However, even the smaller cozy rooms have been thoughtfully decorated, while some of the larger rooms boast scenic views of the river. Of course, since the hotel overlooks the station, some rooms can be noisy at night – ask for a room facing away from the station if you like to sleep with the window open.

XO Hotels City Centre is a good budget option in a central location (which can be difficult to find in an expensive city like Amsterdam). The hotel is located very near Dam square, just behind the Damrak avenue and canal. This is right next to the red light district, with its many gay bars and shops – Dirty Dicks, an Amsterdam gay fetish institution, is just around the block, as is Eagle, which hosts many regular gay club nights.

The hotel itself is, as you can expect, pretty basic. The decor isn’t particularly modern but the rooms are comfortable. The single and double rooms tend to be quite compact, but the triple and quadruple rooms are especially spacious, and handy for a group of friends on a budget – depending on the time of the year, a group of four could sleep here for similar rates than a hostel dorm room.

Do note that this hotel is renovating its exterior until June 2019, with works planned during the day (8:30 am to 4 pm) on weekends. This shouldn’t be a problem for most guests, but if you like to sleep in on a weekend (for example, after a big night out in the red light district) then this might not be ideal for you.

The Student Hotel Amsterdam City offers exceptional value for money. This hotel offers both short-term accommodation for tourists and longer stays for students, digital nomads, and other long-term travelers. The rates are good for regular hotel guests, but you will get a particularly good deal if you are planning to stay in Amsterdam for longer than a usual holiday, with “short stay” rates starting from two weeks.

Because of this set-up, you will always get the benefit of a vibrant, young local community in the building – the vibe of a hostel with the convenience and comfort of modern, well-appointed private rooms. Also, because people live here, you get plenty of handy facilities like laundry, a gym, dedicated work spaces, and a great restaurant and bar for meeting your fellow travelers.

All the rooms are simply but pleasantly designed, with comfy beds and plenty of natural light (no hidden underground rooms here). If you are travelling with a big group of friends, don’t miss out on the Play Room: a VIP party suite for six people that includes a lounge area, Playstation, disco ball and – wait for it – dancing pole.

The location is further away from the city center than most hotels on this list, however public transport links are abundant and you can also rent a bike at the hotel to explore Amsterdam like a local.

Flying Pig is a popular chain of hostels in Amsterdam, with this location being by far the most central. Flying Pig Downtown is a 5-minute walk away from Dam square and Amsterdam Centraal, and even closer to Damrak. It is just next to the red light district, making it one of the city’s best party hostels.

Various cruising bars are walking distance, including The Cuckoo’s Nest, The WEB, and Drake’s Cruising, as well as the city’s only gay sauna. For a more chilled-out vibe, two of Amsterdam’s gay bar institutions, The Queen’s Head and Café ’t Mandje, are both under 10 minutes away.

However, the party isn’t just about the surrounding area. This is very much that kind of hostel – the downstairs bar is a party hotspot in itself, with DJs spinning and parties on every night. That said, the rooms are surprisingly quiet whenever you do decide to sleep, and the constant buzz means you’ll never struggle to make new friends for the night.

There are both dorm and private rooms available. There is a very good kitchen for those who like to prepare their own meals and a chilled-out “activity room” with Netflix for when you want to socialize but not necessarily drink at the bar.

Ecomama is an eco-conscious hotel offering both dorm and private rooms in a range of sizes and styles. From the “El Cheapo” dorm room (featuring admittedly sparse decor) to the Shabby Cabin (a bohemian option that essentially translates to a mattress on the floor), the hotel is not afraid to cater to tight budgets, and is refreshingly honest about their offerings. If you are looking for a bit more, there are two different levels of dorm room (each with their own benefits) as well as super-comfy doubles.

As the name implies, Ecomama prides itself in being green. This is reflected in their choice of furniture and materials as well as in their heating, water, and waste management systems. This makes Ecomama a great choice if you care about sustainable travel and enjoy supporting eco-conscious businesses.

The vibe is very much not party hostel, but still very friendly. The hotel organizes regular outings and tours for their guests, and the communal area is perfect for meeting people. Other lovely touches include regular movie nights (hosted in Ecomama’s very own teepee) and bi-weekly family-style dinners where guests are invited to cook and share food together.

The location is slightly east of the usual tourist area of Amsterdam, which has its benefits. It’s an extremely quiet area, close to the Zoo and the Botanical Garden. However, it’s not actually far from the action: the red light district is just 15 minutes away on foot, and the rest of Amsterdam is easily accessible by tram, bus, or bike.

Tell Me Everything
CityHub is an ultra-modern high-tech hostel, offering guests a range of capsule-style “Hubs” to spend the night. The Hubs are spacious and extremely comfortable, with cool features like controllable lighting, build-in speakers with Bluetooth access, and excellent soundproofing. They offer unparalleled privacy for a hostel experience, making them great for a couple on a budget (all Hubs are Double-sized).

Everything in hotel is handled through a wristband, with which you access your Hub, pay for your drinks at the bar, and buy snacks from the vending machine. Everything from the Hubs to the large shared bathrooms are impeccably clean and perfectly designed. This creates a convenient, seamless, and safe experience for all guests.

The hostel is located in Amsterdam’s Oud-West area, one of the city’s up-and-coming neighborhoods for drinking, dining, and shopping. TRUT, a popular Sunday night gay disco with locals, is just a five-minute walk away. Meanwhile, you can reach all of Amsterdam’s attractions – as well as its main gayborhoods – within a 20-minute tram or 10-minute cycle.
