Your support is needed for Taiwan, Indonesia & Singapore

Searching on Google for May Day, the top results are all about the public holiday or something associated with fun. BUT May 2017 in Asia shows the different directions countries are moving in. Shocking news is never ending for LGBT community. We ask three local guys from Taiwan, Indonesia, and Singapore to share their opinions.

#LoveWins Taiwan but the game is still on!!

On 24 May 2017, Taiwan has just taken a major step towards increasing rights for lesbian and gay people. The top court has ruled it is unconstitutional to ban same-sex couples from getting married and legally registering those marriages. Parliament now has two years to amend the law, or same-sex couple will be able to marry under existing laws. Sourced from BBC.

Here’s Hugo, a young local influencer’s opinion about Taiwan to become the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage.

#LoveWins Cutest Gay Couple Asian Guys Taiwan's Gay Marriage
Hugo (left) & Andee (right)

1.What are your thoughts on the news stories about gay marriage in Taiwan?

“I think it is a very good start. However, Taiwan is always active when it comes to political issues. We have 2 main parties which barely work together. There are 2 ways in making the law now! One is creating a special law and the other is revising the civil law. So I think we will see a lot of political debates in the coming 2 years. But the good thing is, no matter how much drama there will be, we will surely have the rights to get married after 2 years, according to the explanation that’s made by the judge.”

2. How do you feel about the future for gay rights in Taiwan?

“Gay rights in Taiwan will get better for sure. We have gay rights events for many years. In the beginning, the participants were mainly the LGBT community. Now you can see more support from the straight people joining the event too. We see less discrimination now when coming out at school and workplaces.”

3.Thinking about gay male tourists visiting Taiwan, should this news affect their travel plans?

“Taipei is one of the most gay-friendly cities in Asia. People here are very friendly towards the LGBT people. So you will feel truly welcomed and comfortable here.”

What’s happening in Indonesia? Two boys were whipped in public while gay sauna visitors are being arrested!

Last month, police in Surabaya, arrested 141 men for having a sex party in gay sauna. While still waiting if they found guilty, here is another breaking news, thousands of people witnessed the caning in Aceh. The crowd shouted insults and cheered as the men, aged 20 and 23, were whipped across the back and winced with pain. Sourced from BBC.

A voice from Safir, an Indonesian based in Bangkok, formerly working for the United Nations. Currently acting as Senior Communications Officer of APCOM, the non-profit organisation behind Test-BKK – HIV testing campaign for young gay men in Bangkok, Saigon, Manila and soon Hong Kong.

1. What are your thoughts on what’s happening related to the news story above?

“I’m grieving for the victims, and I’m angry with how inhumane the Indonesian authorities are. The intrusion of privacy is clearly a human rights violation. Consensual sex, regardless what the gender is, doesn’t hurt anyone and therefore shouldn’t be punishable. In the caning case in Aceh, we saw a crowd of ignorant people watching the caning and cheering for it. We know how miserable and lowlife these people are because they get the joy out of someone else’s torture. What’s next is for every Indonesians to ask themselves: what do you achieve by making others less equal? Religion shouldn’t be a reason to justify the basic human rights violation.”

2. How do you feel about the future for gay rights in Indonesia?

“This really is a tough question. Historically, Indonesia has been advancing its civil rights movement – in baby steps. The country has changed its politic system from dictatorship to democracy. Looking at LGBT movement retrospectively, this is a time where the visibility of LGBT people in Indonesia is getting bigger – and many Indonesians are trying to adjust to this “change.” It’s too early to predict the future of LGBT people in Indonesia now. What we know is that the conversations are happening across the country and the LGBT community activists, both local and international, are doing their best to achieve the future we want.”

3.Thinking about gay male tourists visiting Indonesia, should this news affect their travel plans?

“Indonesia is a country with thousands of islands divided into 34 provinces, each with different cultural and religious influence. The answer really depends on the destination plan. Some provinces will stay being LGBT friendly, some others will stay being conservative or worse. The caution that the LGBT tourists should pack in their mind before visiting the country is that, given what has happened, the intrusion of privacy might be justified by Indonesian law enforcers – that’s a horrifying truth.”

Foreigners are banned from Pink Dot Singapore LGBT event

Those who are not registered as residents of Singapore will not be allowed into the 1st July event. 2017 Pink Dot’s organizers were reminded by the Singapore Police Force that the current law does not distinguish between participants and observers, and regards anyone who turns up to Hong Lim Park in support of an event to be part of an assembly. Sourced from BBC.

Here’s what Dez Yeo, the Director of ElementMag, Asia’s first gay men’s high-fashion and lifestyle journal has to say about this matter.

Dez Yeo Director of ElementMag

1.What are your thoughts on what’s happening related to the news story above?

“I must say that Pink Dot Singapore has done a great job this year by raising more than $200k from more than 100 local companies after the government banned foreign involvement and sponsorship of the event. As an LGBT Singaporean, I call for all my fellow LGBT Singaporeans not to be complacent anymore and must attend this annual rally to show those bigots that we are also united.”

2.How do you feel about the future for gay rights in Singapore?

“I hope that Sec 377a of the penal code can be removed soon. This code has definitely hindered a lot of necessary information and education for the young LGBTs living in Singapore such as safe sex. The future is positive as Pink Dot Singapore rally has been increasing in the number of participants. One day we will be able to celebrate Freedom of love in Singapore.”

3.Thinking about gay male tourists visiting Singapore, should this news affect their travel plans?

“Definitely! I personally think LGBT tourism will stay status quo in Singapore. However, I believe with the new legislation from Taiwan, the LGBT tourism will boom further. There is finally an option for LGBTs to get married within Asia.”

Chris & his experience as a gay man

“I came out when I was 16, I didn’t really discuss my sexuality with my parents (or anyone in my extended family). It was when my mom told me “It is ok not to get married like us, son.”, I guess that’s when I realized they somewhat know. The next big step is to tell them that I’m gay, literally.

Difficult parts of being a gay in Singapore – For me it really depends, engaging in homosexual activity is still illegal here. Most of the challenges probably derive from individual’s working environment/culture (choose your boss/company wisely if you have the choice!).”

Kevin on coming out & life as a gay man:

“My life hasn’t changed much since I came out but I’ve learned how to protect myself and get stronger, actually I didn’t come out with my family for some reasons, only to my friends and on social media.

Australia is freedom country, especially in Sydney. Same sex marriage has been on the political agenda in Australia for several years, as part of the broader debate about the legal recognition of same sex relationships.

It is really hard to come out to my family cause I’m the only child but I hope one day they will understand and accept me in personally and LGBT in generally. I’ve made so many friends and social networks. I’m happy because I get to be myself.”

Trasher | Bangkok’s No. 1 Gay Pop Party Event

Trasher Bangkok Xmas Eve Bad Santa Party Gay Event

Ark Saroj was on the couch dancing in black underwear with a tiger on the crotch. “I don’t wanna rock, DJ, but you making me feel so nice,” he sang as he threw his arms out in a disco pantomime to Robbie Williams hit “Rock DJ.” The room was quiet and then burst into applause for the creative director and one of the founders of Trasher, the hit queer party and multi media company in Bangkok. Another shot was taken and then the shoot went live, streaming across the internet.

Saroj wasn’t always dancing for thousands of Facebook live viewers. It all started with some mix tapes and parties for friends. “It began in 2007 in Café Democ and then went to Club Culture then to 808,” Ark said. “Now we move around to larger venues.”

The large venues are needed to accommodate the swarms of party goers that attend the monthly pop music affairs but, “at the time when Trasher began there was only rock, electronic, or ska music. People didn’t enjoy the club scene. They would just stand pretending to be so cool,” Jojo Tichakorn, the director and founder of Trasher said. “We started to play music that we wanted to hear. Pop music. It was bad, all pop music is garbage but it is recycled, it lasts forever and that’s why we named the party Trasher. We are garbage people that like trashy music.”

Trasher Bangkok

Since the humble beginnings at Café Democ in Bangkok the party has grown exponentially from 50-100 people at the first parties to thousands of people jamming the venues of GMM Live, Central World concert halls and the clubs of the RCA where the party is at. The growth of Trasher has been the savvy use of social media.

“We really grew a lot when we did the parody music videos, in 2007 or 2008.” Saroj said. The multi media company’s explosion began with their clever covers of popular hit songs such as “We Found Love,” by Rihianna , “The One that Got Away” by Katy Perry and “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, each of which have garnered over a million views.

“When people shared the videos they became interested in us. Oh whose these guys? We can participate,” Tichakorn said. “We can go to the parties and not just like things on the facebook. These guys like the music that we like.”

Beginning with using hi five, then myspace and finally facebook, Trasher has always had its hand in the internet world. “It really took off with our youtube not a lot of people were doing homemade videos. We only promote via social media,” Tichakorn stated. “If we aren’t always growing, if we will not evolve and the party will die.”

The founder and director’s knowledge of the changing landscape of media has had him expand from running the theme parties to starting a youtube web series, Gayok, sponsored by Testbkk. The show aims at accurately portraying the lives of Gay men in Bangkok. With 60-70% of the Trasher attendees being LGBT and with both Ark Saroj and Jojo Tichakorn being out gay men Gayok is a natural extension of the Trasher project.

“I want Trasher to become a community that loves the same stuff, from music to movies, to art, to culture. In the media, especially Thai media, gay people are portrayed as comedic. I wanted to create something that gives people hope. That we are the same as straight people, that we can have a happy life,” Tichakorn said.

Trasher has had a huge impact on the party culture and has made the nightlife culture more fun. Rather than standing around tables Parties like Trasher have helped create a positive atmosphere to meet, talk, and engage with other party goers that attendees might not know. With Trasher expanding outwards into Gayok and other media projects the fun isn’t just on the dancefloor anymore.

The next Trasher party is scheduled for Xmas Eve with Bad Santa Theme and the tickets are available now!

My favorite parts about being gay & living a gay lifestyle is that most gay men love to workout and keep themselves in perfect condition. And the part that I don’t like is gossiping or talking back to others but I guess it happens to all genders, right?”

Patrick & Renato – Chic, Memorable & Perfect

Moment of the day? This is a hard question because there are so many moments! We wrote our own vows and there was not a single dry eye during the ceremony, which was really emotional, but the speeches our moms gave were amazing!
Big or Small? We invited more than 300 people but most of them were from abroad, since Renato is from Brazil. So at the end 160 people attended our wedding. We are lucky we didn’t have any issues/problems as it was a gay wedding, everyone was just as excited and happy as we were.
Three wedding plan tips? Find a good party planner, trust your vendors and keep calm. Planning a wedding can be stressful but it’s also fun, enjoy the process!
Choosing your perfect venue? Renato had some very specific ideas and Patrick went along with it. He always pictured an outdoor wedding. Since Patrick’s family lives in the wine country so we thought about a California Winery.
When & Where? Our Venue was Chateau St. Jean in Sonoma, California, United States during Spring.

Huy & David – Warm, Simple & Cozy

Moment of the day? It definitely was the ring exchange, Huy had trouble putting the ring on David and everyone had a good laugh. Also we kissed before we were allowed by the judge because we were too excited.
Big or Small? Our family were perfectly fine with the wedding, no problem. It was a small wedding with 45 people. We had brunch after the ceremony and a reception at night. The only challenge was the logistic since everyone was from outside the city.
Choosing your perfect venue? We originally wanted the Campbell house historic mansion and we called literally everywhere, it’s super expensive in Toronto.
Three wedding plan tips? Plan at least a year in advance and do it your way!
When & Where? June 20 2015, we picked a private dinning room at a restaurant called “Hush” during summer in Toronto, Canada.

Johnny & Sebastian – Emotional & Life Changing

Moment of the day? It was a very happy but tearful moment. I had to ask my dear friend to walk me down the aisle because my mother was so resistant and didn’t want to get involved. Her mind changed completely during the actual wedding and she was excited about it and wanted to look her best. I was so overwhelmed that I started to cry uncontrollably. The moment was unforgettable and incredibly special.
Big or Small? 100 guests with our families and friends. Johnny’s Parents were hesitant to come at first. They did not feel comfortable and had not supported the relationship. But once they arrived, the wedding allowed them to meet our friends and witness our relationship in person and that somehow changed their minds.
Three wedding plan tips? Create a budget and try very hard to stick to it. Weddings can be overwhelming and you can very easily get carried away.
Choosing your perfect venue? We went to the Banyan Tree Maradona before and it left such a positive impression on us that we jokingly said we would get married there. When it came time to pick a venue, there was no other place we had in mind.
When & Where? It was in Banyan Tree Manitoba, In Playa del Carmen in Mexico in November 2012.

Andi & Chris – LOVE, Happy People & Unforgettable Moments

Moment of the day? Andi’s mum almost couldn’t come on time because of snowstorm. So they called the police for help to toiled them out of the chaos to the wedding by the police escort. With all helped for Andi’s family to be on time so he could hug his mum. Otherwise he wouldn’t get married without her.
Big or Small? It was quite big at the end with over hundred people of our families and friends. Our families had no problems at all with our wedding. Everybody was so touched because of our love and wedding.
Three wedding plan tips? Try to create a “not too gay – atmosphere”. No need to be the party focus and be as simple as possible. Start early to plan, time is running fast!
Choosing your perfect venue? We wanted something really modern, the place we could dance and party over the roof of Graz.
When & Where? 17 Dec 2011 at an old castle called Schlossberg Restaurant during winter in Graz, Austria.

Steve & Cormac – Made Fetch Happen (we had a mean girls themed table plan)

Moment of the day? Our favourite moment was listening to the seven hilarious and heartfelt speeches from our friends and each other. Living in Leeds but having grown up in different parts of the world its rare to have all your favourite people under one roof and we loved it.
Big or Small? We had a full day event and had 150 guests to both the ceremony and reception. Both our families were incredibly accepting of us and excited for our wedding in the lead up.
Three wedding plan tips? Ditch the yawn inducing traditions, celebrate your charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent and throw a party to remember! It can seem overwhelming at times but just remember why you’re getting married rather than getting absorbed with silly details. You’ll have all the people you love in one room so have the best time and party like a rock-star!
Choosing your perfect venue? We aren’t a traditional couple and wanted our wedding to reflect that. The team were completely accepting of all the little eccentricities we introduced to our wedding day. It really makes a difference to the day when you know you have staff to rely on to make sure things run smoothly.
When & Where? It was a beautiful sunny spring day on Sunday the 9th of March, 2017. East Riddlesden Hall, West Yorkshire, England.
