Obsession with the Giant Inflatable Swan!

Come on, you can’t deny it, these swans have been floating around for years and it seems they have been blowing up on Instagram lately, sometimes literally! Wondering where would be the best summer destinations to hit and give them a ride? Find out more about the instagramer behind the hashtag #TheGayPassport. Let’s hop in!

1. Before the fall

Eddie & Westchester County Swan

Must do in NY? For those who love New York City! Saint Mark’s Place for some Korean food & cocktails from Boka, then smoke some hookah at Cloister Cafe, and finish your night at Phoenix Bar. Chelsea for Barracuda Bar on Saturday night and then treat yourself to some late night pizza at Artichoke Pizza (warning: huge, but delicious slice). Hell’s Kitchen for some $1 pizza on 9th Avenue and then go bar hopping! Start your night at Rise for a nice pregame, and then work your way to Vodka Soda Bottoms Up and The Ritz to finish your night.
Top three summer destinations? Los Angeles for beautiful weather & palm trees. Chill on the beach & day drink until you go out at Miami, one of the most fun, carefree destinations to visit. NYC, it’s my home and the city never sleeps, isn’t that a beautiful thing 😉

2. Don’t give up on it

Ian & Hong Kong Swan

Must do in HK? When in Hong Kong do what Hongkonese do 😉 so first, you need to hike to hit the peak, then experience the funniest boat party in Asia is a must! Lastly, you can’t leave the city without tasting the delicious Dim-Sum. Yep, you’ve gotta do it all 🙂
Top three summer destinations? It’s hard to only pick three here. Anyway, Bangkok will definitely guaranteed the fun, EI Nido in Philippines for breathtaking & paradise islands. Finally, I AM Seoul party in South Korea, it’s an OMG party to die for 😉

3. What you need to do is… float!

Safir & Phuket Swan

Must do in Phuket? 1- Treat yourself to a Thai massage by the sea during sunset. 2- Watching Phuket FantaSea for an entertaining of culture themes and 3- venturing Phuket’s one and only gay district, Paradise Complex in Patong Beach 😉
Top three summer destinations? I can simply shout out to these places, Bali to find yourself a calm spot & awesome party vibes. Krabi is the best place to climb (popular place to meet other gay rock climbers 😉 and Seoul for K-Pop dance anthem and nightclubs to hit until morning light.

4. Yep! carry on…floating

Must do in NY? First, take the Friday night trip via boat to Cherry Grove for their big weekly party and then walk back on the beach. 2nd, go to low, middle and high tea to socialize with everyone else on the island for the weekend and the last must do is, go to the beach, pool and BBQ parties to meet new other party people & make new friends 🙂
Top three summer destinations? Chicago, IL for boating on Lake Michigan and all of the great Summer Festivals. Fire Island in New York for it’s beautiful and crazy little slice of heaven and the last one is Mykonos in Greece for the amazing beaches and parties!

5. Isn’t it, swan looks good on us?

Justin & Ubud Swan

Must do in Bali? Monkey Forest, they can and probably will climb on you! So now you are forewarned, do be careful and be prepared. I saw a man get peed on while a monkey perched himself on his shoulder! Potato-head cafe in Seminyak area could get a bit too crowded but it offers a stunning view with great ambiance of the beach for sunset. And you definitely must hit the stunning Rice fields on the cliffs.
Top three summer destinations?
My top 3 would be Thailand, I have more than one favorite place to go, apart from BKK, I also like Krabi. Japan for hustle & bustle of Tokyo as well as Osaka for food and as it is close to other destinations like Kyoto for the Fushimi Inari Taisha and Arashimaya for scenic beauty. San Francisco for the hippie and happy vibes where there’s also natural hub like Yosemite national park and New York, the city of lights!

6. It makes your day everywhere you go

Kristoffer & Miyakojima Island Swan

Must do in Japan? There are awesome water activities such as scuba diving, island hopping and trekking are definitely a must! Maehama Beach has the finest sand in the coast of on Miyakojima Island, Japan.
Top three summer destinations? My first one would be Sydney for Manly beach (I know it speaks for itself) and there’s so much to see. 2nd is a tick on my bucket-list to take part in the Carnival Festival of Rio de Janeiro, who doesn’t love beaches with Brazilians anyway? 😉 Also to jump off a plane for skydiving to add more hype on the trip! The last one is I’d love to go to Reykjavic, Iceland and be rejuvenated with their geothermal spas. Lol

7. Sunshine & a giant

Trevor & Los Angeles Swan

Must do in California? These are the hot spots you must hit for sight seeing, Beverly Hills & Hollywood. 2nd, Santa Monica Pier for the iconic & popular landmark and the last one is Malibu State Park for the breathtaking nature scenes.
Top three summer destinations? I’m a big fan of nature scene so my top three are Alaska and Swiss alps for it’s variety & density of mountains and forests. I love beaches and the impressive volcanoes in Costa Rica.

Coming Out on the Road: A Traveler’s Fear of being Different.

Michael-Grant---Coming-Out

“The sex is great, but she’s crazy. What would you do?”

“The sex is great, but she’s crazy. What would you do? ” asks Simon, the German backpacker I just met this morning on a train bound for Kanchanaburi, Thailand. He’s spent all day telling me about his girlfriend back home: her trust-issues, her exes, and her boobs. As I assume guys do, he wants me to be impressed, jealous maybe, of his sexy, wild girl. I’m not. And tonight, him and I are sharing a tiny, intimate bungalow – I know, moving quickly.

Afraid to freak him out or ruin my first traveling friendship, I still haven’t told him I’m gay. And to his lament, I reply with an innocent, but honest, “I don’t know. I’ve only had one relationship.”

As a male traveler, it’s expected to get along and travel with other males, like a bro thing: drink beer, talk about rock/rap music, and scope girls out together. And while I try (and fail terribly at the latter to the point where I succeed at the first), it’s always awkward. Maybe they don’t feel it, but I certainly do.

I’m always afraid to reveal I’m gay, even after being out for 11 years, after coming out to hundreds, maybe thousands, of strangers and friends. So why is it so hard to come out just one more time?

Laos is amazing. 👍🏼

Perhaps rejection is scarier on the road? After all, I don’t have the comforting shoulders of familiar friends, the support system of family, or my complete collection of Kelly Clarkson to get me through it. Nor is there a cheap Cabernet in Southeast Asia to down by the bottle.

But the truth about backpackers is this: They are probably the most open-minded people in the world. Travelers leave their countries, their culture behind, to learn about others’ beliefs and lifestyles. They are traveling to learn of our global differences, and better, our similarities. And of course, to have a good time. We all just want to find genuine, exciting connections, to laugh, smile, and love one another.

“Have you ever had these girl problems, though?” responds Simon.

“Never,” I say. “I’m gay.”

I hold my breath for what might come next.

“Ohhhh.”

The next three seconds feel like the 3 hour train ride this morning.

“Have you ever had these GUY problems, then?” He laughs as he makes it clear: he doesn’t really care, he just wants advice.

“Yes,” I answer.

And suddenly, it feels as if I have just taken off my 20 kilo backpack after a long day of travel. Maybe our differences are trivial compared to our similarities. Maybe coming out needn’t be so scary; after all, everyone is different on the road of travel.

My new best friend. 🐘

Hot Asian Medical Student and His Gay Travel Guide to San Francisco James Gao

21 Questions with Bachelor of the Week

The 26-year-old talented medical student and Andrew Christian’s model was born in Beijing. James graduated from Cornell, and becoming a doctor has always been his career goal. The soon-to-be sexiest doctor alive reveals his emotional coming out story, and how his life has been living in San Francisco. Don’t forget to hit the SHARE button if you love it!

“I work out 5-6 times per week, I found that dragging myself to the gym despite being exhausted after a 12 or 16 hour day during surgery or on inpatient rotations helped me stay sane. This past year, I have gotten more into modeling. It started with The New Asian Man calendar, and modeling with Andrew Christian. It’s an honor to represent Asian men in media and in American gay culture. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, reading and hanging out with friends. I hope to become a motivational public figure and inspire people to always work hard and never give up on their dreams.”

TRAVEL SAN FRANCISCO

13. Three reasons to visit?

1. People are extremely friendly,
2. San Francisco is a beautiful city,
3. Must try local food: Tony’s Pizza Napoletana

14. When is the best time to visit?

Middle to late June if you want to join gay pride. I would say that the best time to visit is around August, when the weather is a little warmer. The temperature varies but is usually around 60F/15C, for the rest of the year, and some parts of the city can be pretty foggy and chilly.

15. What’s your recommended must do attraction?

Party Boys: The Castro is a vibrant and entertaining neighborhood with a lot of great bars and fun dance clubs. There is usually a mixed crowd, and each bar or club has its own distinct character and ambiance. Places I like to go include The Cafe, The Mix, and The Lookout. What is important to know is that most bars in The Castro do not take credit cards, so make sure you bring cash.

Foodie Boys: The best place for Asian food would be Japantown and the Sunset, must try hot pot, pho, ramen, and poke. The Mission has a large community of Hispanic people, and there is some great food there as well.

Other amazing locations include Land’s End for hiking, Golden Gate Park for walking, Fisherman’s Wharf for sight-seeing and seafood, and Delores Park for relaxing and hanging out.

16. Favorite night to party?

Saturday night

17. Where would you go?

It depends. Two great parties for gay Asian guys include Shangri-la, usually on the last Saturday of each month at the EndUp, and GAMeBoi at Rickshaw Stop, which is also a monthly Saturday event that is 18+.

18. What’s special about it?

Being gay and Asian in America can sometimes feel alienating as we are a marginalized group of people in the gay community.
Having a safe space to hang out and party with guys who are also gay and Asian is a special privilege.

19. Which neighborhood is best to stay in?

I would say for a tourist, you should try to stay downtown, where you have easy access to shopping, a lot of great restaurants, and tourist attractions. Getting around via public transportation and taxi is pretty convenient.
The Castro is the closest to the gay bars, but it can be loud. The nice hotels are located downtown in Union Square and Nob Hill. I live in the Sunset, which is very suburban and quiet.

20. Whats special about that neighborhood?

In downtown, you really feel like you are in the heart of the city. Around the holidays, downtown is beautifully decorated. You also get to be right in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of all the excitement and culture of the city.
I would definitely encourage exploring all the different neighborhoods, because each neighborhood has a unique personality.

James on coming out & life as a gay man:

“It was extremely difficult. As the only son of a traditional Chinese American Christian household, it was the most difficult thing I have ever done in my entire life. I couldn’t even bring myself to tell my parents in person. I remember distinctly on the first Monday in January, of 2013, I wrote them a long letter and just left home. After the reunion, it was a long and arduous process that took the better part of the year. After a lot of tears and family movie nights with films like “Prayers for Bobby” and “Priest,” eventually my parents realized I was the same person, and that being gay didn’t fundamentally change who I was. I’m really proud of the progress they have made, and my parents are the most important people in my life.

Coming out to my friends was difficult too. I was heavily involved in a Christian organization at Cornell. After I graduated in three years, I took a year off before starting medical school. Leaving the campus really allowed me to reflect and find myself. I lost contact with a lot of friends from college as a result of it, but there is not a single day that I regret coming out. Now I have a community of amazing, talented, brilliant people who I can call my family. Being able to be myself has also strengthen a number of my existing friendships. The support has been overwhelming, and moving forward, there is still a lot for me to learn as an out gay man. It has also shaped my vision for myself as a future physician, advocate, and activist.

Moving to SF has been one of the best thing that has happened to me. It is one of the most gay-friend cities in the world. In addition to having a dynamic and lively gay nightlife scene. I can’t really think of a negative aspect of being gay in San Francisco.

I don’t really enjoy circuit parties (unless I’m hired to attend). I think they perpetuate a destructive lifestyle that is focused on recreational drugs, superficial standards of attractiveness, and mindless casual sex with complete strangers. However, I think that if you go with a group of reliable and responsible friends, it can be a fun experience every now and then.

One of the best things about being gay is that I feel that I can be completely open about my sexuality, especially with my gay friends. There is a certain openness that I feel creates a judgement-free environment amongst gay men to speak unapologetically about sexual issues without fear of embarrassment or censorship.”

Danny on coming out & life as a gay man:

“I have had a number of ex-girlfriends in Malaysia and living as a bisexual person in Penang at the time wasn’t easy, but my family accepted me early on and I was fortunate enough to have caring family and friends who were very supportive.

Moving to Singapore to work helped with the gay part of my life as the city gave me many opportunities to meet similar people both at work and on the social front. This also made me realized that there were parts of the gay lifestyle that make me uncomfortable: sleeping around with people whom I barely know or who isn’t my boyfriend at the time, the threesomes or more type of group activities, going to saunas, or receiving requests to receive payment for sex, these are all huge turn-offs.

The best things about being gay for me, is really having that simple closeness of a one on one relationship built from love, trust and mutual respect, which I have struggled to find in the past 2 and a half years. I do feel that being different makes me more sensitive to find someone who is right for me and vice versa. This can be challenging sometimes due to the nature of the gay lifestyle where bitchiness and gossip around, but this challenge makes me treasure the guy whom I can find that right connection with. For those who’re reading this, there have only been 2 people who fit the bill in the past, you know who you are :)”

Huy on coming out & life as a gay man:

“HCM city is quite open for gay. You can hug, hand in hand on streets but don’t go too far though. Some people still hate gay but majority is very supportive for gay community.

I’m very open about my personal life so almost all my friends know and they still treat me well as usual. My favorite part about being a gay is you can be successful and beautiful at the same time, not many straight  man can do lol.

Actually I haven’t had official come out yet. Some people have the idea of me not into girls, and some aren’t sure. I guess this is one of many ways I can come out and show poeple who I am.”

It’s been awhile since the last bachelor and it’s definitely worth a wait. Interview with a fit Taiwanese-American, Mikkoh, who’s obsessed with music (and that’s including karaoke too). Check out his coming out story and his thoughts on life as a gay man in New York City.

“I went to the University of California, San Diego to double major in Economics & Psychology with a minor in Accounting. I’ve lived in California and New York. I work in analytics at a technology startup while modeling at a big agency. Outside of weightlifting, I love yoga, swim, and, I tend to travel every other month.”

Both have their pros and cons. Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea will give you a good sense of gay bar culture. The lounges I mentioned will give you a sense of the glamorous side of New York City.

Mikkoh on coming out & life as a gay man:

“Coming out wasn’t easy, mostly because of the pressure that I put on myself. My family and friends were all very supportive. I came out at 22 and I can say that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.

New York is a very single city. Everyone is looking for the next best thing and that’s a difficult part of being gay here. There are many parts of the gay lifestyle such as parties, saunas, and gay dating apps that I don’t partake, but I am a very open person. I don’t shame anyone for doing what brings them happiness.
